  149.     III.      W_H_A_T_ I_S_ "_B_A_B_Y_ K_E_Y_S_"_?_

  151.     If you own a computer and have a young child between 6 to 24 months of age,
  152.     then you have probably noticed that he has a certain curiosity about that
  153.     strange looking box sitting on your desk. Children naturally have an
  154.     attraction to it and find the keyboard to be irresistible. It would be a
  155.     shame to let that interest and energy go to waste. This is where "Baby Keys"
  156.     comes in. When "Baby Keys" is running, all your child has to do is hit the
  157.     keys on the keyboard (this comes naturally). The computer will produce a
  158.     variety of sounds accompanied with graphical images that will capture her
  159.     attention (at least for a few minutes).

  162.     IV.       C_O_M_P_A_T_I_B_I_L_I_T_Y_
  163.  
  164.     "Baby Keys" will work with any IBM PC or true compatible (See SYSTEM
  165.     REQUIREMENTS). However, users of the TANDY 1000-EX and 1000-HX computers may
  166.     have to place the following statement in their CONFIG.SYS file:
  167.  
  168.          DEVICE=KEYCNVRT.SYS
  169.  
  170.     This makes it possible for "Baby Keys" to recognize the keyboard used by
  171.     these computers.

  174.     V.        S_Y_S_T_E_M_ R_E_Q_U_I_R_E_M_E_N_T_S_

  176.     To run "Baby Keys", you need the following:
  177.  
  178.          *    82K (Kilo bytes) of f_r_e_e_ memory
  179.          *    A Floppy or Hard drive system
  180.          *    PC, MS or DR DOS 2.11 or above
  181.          *    A HERCULES, CGA, MCGA, PLANTRONICS, EGA, or VGA graphics adapter.

  184.     VI.       I_N_S_T_A_L_L_A_T_I_O_N_

  186.     To install BABY KEYS, simply type in the name of the self-extracting program
  187.     BKEYS.EXE (If "BKEYS.EXE" is not available, then you should use the
  188.     "LHA.EXE" utility for extraction).

  190.     On a Floppy Drive System
  191.          Please make sure you have enough space on the disk that you wish to
  192.          install BABY KEYS on. Assuming that BABY KEYS is in your A: drive, you

  206.          First create a subdirectory on your hard disk to contain the BABY KEYS
  207.          files. Type the following:

  209.               C: <ENTER>  (or whatever your hard drive letter is)

  211.               CD \BABYKEYS <ENTER>

  213.          Assuming that BABY KEYS is currently on a floppy diskette in the A:
  214.          drive, type the following from your C: drive:

  222.     To start "Baby Keys":

  224.     On a Floppy Disk system:
  225.          Place the floppy diskette containing "Baby Keys" in your A or B floppy
  226.          drive.

  228.          Type: A: (or B:) <ENTER>

  232.     On a Hard Disk system:
  233.          Type: C: (or D:) <ENTER>

  237.     To exit "Baby Keys", press the <CTRL><BREAK> keys together. That is, while
  238.     holding the <CTRL> key down, press the <BREAK> key. Due to the m_a_c_h_i_n_e_
  239.     l_e_v_e_l_ nature of some of the graphics displayed on the screen, you may have
  240.     to press <CTRL><BREAK> a number of times to stop the program. When you
  241.     press <CTRL><BREAK>, you should see the message "Do you really want to
  242.     quit?". Pressing 'Y' terminates the program. Pressing any other key
  243.     continues the program.

  246.     VIII.      M_O_R_E_ O_N_ "_B_A_B_Y_ K_E_Y_S_"_
  247.  
  248.     "Baby Keys" will produce sounds from a list of up to 22 different tones
  249.     (See the file README.TXT file for a list of changes from version 1.0.0).
  250.     Along with these sounds, your child will see a random variety of graphical
  251.     images displayed on the screen. This includes:
  252.  
  253.          *    CIRCLES
  254.          *    CONCENTRIC CIRCLES
  255.          *    DIAMONDS
  256.          *    ELLIPSES
  257.          *    RECTANGLES
  258.          *    SQUARES
  259.          *    TRIANGLES

  261.     You can easily see how your child will not only be entertained, but with

  272.     IX.  S_U_G_G_E_S_T_I_O_N_S_ F_O_R_ U_S_E_

  274.     For both you and your child to gain the most from "Baby Keys", please
  275.     consider the following suggestions:
  276.  
  277.          1)   Always be present when your child is playing the game. You
  278.               wouldn't want to come back and find missing files on your PC. Or
  279.               worse, grape juice spilled on your keyboard.
  280.  
  281.          2)   Make sure your child sits at least 24 inches away from the
  282.               computer screen and that the keyboard is easily within reach.
  283.  
  284.          3)   If your child is beginning to talk, you may want to mention the
  285.               name of different figures as they appear on the screen. In my
  286.               daughter's case, we have been showing her the clock on the wall
  287.               and mentioning the word "clock". So when she sees the filled
  288.               circles on the computer screen, she looks up at the clock, points
  289.               and says "clock" (or something close to that).
  290.  
  291.          4)   Try to avoid letting your child play with the game for more than
  292.               20 minutes. As everybody knows, a child's attention span is
  293.               short. Allowing them to play the game for much longer than that,
  294.               may result in their losing interest in it.
  295.  
  296.          5)   Try to have a variety of games available for your child. This way
  297.               they are not playing the same game all the time. There are other
  298.               games similar to this one available on the computer information
  299.               networks (BBS's included).

  302.     X.        T_H_E_ S_H_A_R_E_W_A_R_E_ C_O_N_C_E_P_T_

  304.     "Shareware" is a marketing method that allows a user to try out a program
  305.     before buying it. If after trying the program for some time, the user
  306.     decides to continue using it, he/she is expected to register the program
  307.     with the author for a fee. Many Shareware programmers are entrepreneurs
  308.     that write programs for a living. Their companies are usually very small.
